Pokemon Go IVs
According to Pokemon Go Hub IV stands for Individual Values. IVs are a mechanism to introduce diversity in a group of the same species Pokemon. IV influences various other Pokemon stats, like the amount of Health Points, attack power and more. A good metaphor for IV is to think of them like Pokemon genes. Not all Pokemon are born equal. Some Rattats are bigger, some Pidgeys attack harder and some Kakunas have more defence.
In order to facilitate this diversity, IVs were introduced in the original Gameboy games and hidden away from the general player base. There are only three main IVs that you should remember, Attack IV, Defense IV and Stamina IV. Attack and Defense are obvious, but Stamina comes into play when you leave a Pokemon to defend a gym. The higher the stamina, the longer they can defend before returning.

IV values go from 0 to 15. IVs are not the same thing as base stats. Even though base stats also depend on the specie, they increase when a Pokemon evolves and IVs always stay the same. IVs play a big role in determining the true power and strength of every Pokemon you encounter in the wild. They are especially important when comparing the same species of Pokemon with similar Combat Power.
Not too long after the release of Pokemon Go, it was discovered that IVs made their way into Niantic’s hit title, as well.
How to calculate Pokemon IV?
IV Score is a calculated number that shows how good the combination of genes/IVs a Pokemon has. IV Score can range anywhere from 0% to 100%, where 0% is the worst possible combination of IVs and 100% is the perfect combination of IVs for that species.
As a lot of game information is hidden in Pokemon GO, it is often impossible to determine the exact IV score a Pokemon has. This is why the IV score is always accompanied by a table showing possible IV combinations for a specimen with that CP, HP and Upgrade cost.
IV Perfection shows how close to a perfect IV score a given IV combination is. An IV combination consists of three values: Attack, Defense and Stamina IV. When you compare that combination to a perfect combination of IVs for that Pokemon level, you get “perfection”. Perfection is also shown as a percentage value, ranging from 0 to 100%.
Thus Pokemon Go IVs are hidden stats that are randomly generated when a Pokemon is caught or hatched. These values are between 0 and 15, with a separate value for each stat. If you’re lucky, they can increase a Pokemon’s base stats by roughly 10 per cent.
Check IVs to check the potential of a Pokemon
Here’s a quick example of Pokemon Go IVs. Squirtle’s base stats vs perfect IV stats: Attack – 94 vs 109, Defense – 122 vs 137 and Stamina – 88 vs 103. These stats are then put together into CP (Combat Points), which is the main way a Pokemon’s strength is displayed in Pokemon Go. However, CP also takes Pokemon levels into account, so a 500 CP Squirtle may not have better IVs than a 150 CP Squirtle. The only way to know the true potential of a Pokemon is to check their IVs.
It’s also worth noting that IVs remain the same through evolution, so feel free to evolve that perfect IV Squirtle into a Blastoise.
Pokemon Go IV App
There is one way to check Pokemon Go IVs that’s already built into the game.
- Tap on the Pokemon you want to check.
- Expand the menu on the bottom right.
- Tap Appraise.
If the Pokemon’s IVs are high, you’ll see one of the following messages:
- Mystic: Overall, your Pokemon is a wonder! What a breathtaking Pokemon!
- Valour: Overall, your Pokemon simply amazes me. It can accomplish anything!
- Instinct: Overall, your Pokemon looks like it can really battle with the best of them!
Only Pokemon with 80-100 per cent IVs will return the messages above. If you manage to see it, you’ve got a keeper! The difference between Pokemon GO IV with 0% and 100% IV scores is 10% in terms of CP and general battle performance. It’s not a lot by any means, but it is important for hardcore players. Also, note that IVs are values that only influence Pokemon’s mathematical stats. What moves a Pokemon learns when evolving is not influenced by IV in any way. Nor does it guarantee a better/worse move set.
Finally, if you want to know exactly what the IVs of your Pokemon are, there are several apps and tools available online but note that some of them are against the Pokemon Go terms of service and will get your account banned.
