What is Telstra phone leasing and how does it work

Telstra Phone Lease

Telstra lately has introduced range of phone plans with the option to lease your phone in order to save some money. Known as “Go Mobile Swap Lease Plans”,Telstra is letting customers select devices on a contract for a cheaper price, and then upgrade after 12 months.

With these Telstra’s Go Mobile Swap Lease Plan you can lease your phone from Telstra, rather than buying it. As such, you pay a little less per month, but not much. At most, you’ll save up to $10 per month on your plan, depending on what phone you’re looking at and the inclusions you’re after.

After you’ve been on a Go Mobile Swap Lease Plan for 12 months, you’re able to upgrade to a new device for an extra fee of $99, but you’ll have to sign a new 24 month contract and hand your current device back. If you stay on your plan for 18 months, Telstra will waive the upgrade fee. However, if your phone is damaged, you’ll have to pay extra: $229 if you’ve got a cracked screen, or $499 if the device isn’t in working condition.

Also for extra assurance, add Assure for just $10 per month. Assure gives you the ability to upgrade your damaged phone at any time and in any condition for a flat fee of $190 when you sign up to a new 24 month handset and service plan.

How to lease

You just need to choose from Telstra’s range of bestselling smartphones. Choose your Go Mobile Swap 24 month lease plan. Because you won’t take ownership of the phone, you could pay up to $10 less per month compared to some Go Mobile Plus handset plan combinations. Return your phone after 12 months in good working order and upgrade to a new phone for $99 when you take up a new 24 month handset and service plan.

The amount you pay to lease the handset depends on the plan you take up and the handset you choose. Some of the options don’t require you to pay an additional monthly lease payment.

Phone Devices and the Plan

You can take up this plan on Samsung Galaxy S7 and S 7 Edge, Google Pixel, Pixel XL; HTC 10, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus, Telstra Signature Premium, Telstra Signature Enhanced and Sony Xperia XZ.

With Telstra lease plans, you’re leasing your eligible phone on a 24 month Device Lease Contract with a service plan – you don’t own the device.

If you upgrade, you must return your old phone within 30 days of entering your new eligible service plan. If you don’t return it, Telstra will charge you a non-return fee, which is up to the device’s fair market value (to be advised at the time) plus 20%.

At the end of your lease, you must return the phone undamaged. If it’s damaged, you’ll pay the damage fee. If you don’t return it, you’ll continue to pay your monthly lease payments for up to 6 months, then a non-return fee of the device’s fair market value.

You can offer to purchase your phone device at the end of lease. Be sure to remove the SIM and any personal or confidential data from the device before returning it.

If you cancel your lease early or Telstra will terminate it for your breach before month 12, you must pay any remaining monthly lease payments (excluding any discounts as a result of your eligible service plan) and you will then own the device. If you cancel early or Telstra terminate it for your breach after month 12, you can return the handset and pay $99 if it’s undamaged or up to $499 if it is damaged or you can keep it and pay fair market value (to be advised at the time) and then own the device. All of these fees and payments are on top of any early termination charges for your service plan and accessories.

Go Mobile Swap Lease Plans are very similar to Telstra’s New Phone Feeling, which is a standard inclusion on all postpaid plans.

With New Phone Feeling, you’ve got the option to pay $149 and get a new phone and a new 24-month contract after 12-months. You do have to give your current phone back though, and it has to be in good shape. However, if you don’t want to take up the upgrade offer, you keep your phone.

With Go Mobile Swap Lease Plans, you have to give your phone back no matter what, even if you see out your contract to the end of the 24-month term. You can offer to purchase your device from Telstra at the end of the lease, but not much of information is provided in regards to what this would cost at this point of time by Telstra.
